Shirley Jean Robertson Deskins, 74, of Bluefield went home to her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at her residence following a long illness. Born September 28, 1943 in Mercer County she was the daughter of the late Gooden E. Nelson and Virgie Gertrude Blankenship Nelson. Shirley was a faithful member and choir member of the Faith Baptist Church in Oakvale. Known as “Granny” she was a very special Mother and Grandmother and was always thoughtful of everyone. She had been a lifelong resident of this area. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Robertson. Survivors include her second husband, William Deskins of Princeton; one daughter, Susan Nelson Roberts of the home; stepson, Fred Robertson and wife Sarah of Princeton; adopted son, David Cook of the home; several grandchildren, great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; three sisters, Piney Perkins and husband J.D. of Princeton, Mary Wall and husband Joe of Oakvale, and Clara Nelson of Princeton. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Amedisys Hospice and all of the other caregivers during Shirley’s illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM, Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the Faith Baptist Church in Oakvale with Pastor Terry Lambert officiating. Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 29, 2018 at the Oakvale Cemetery, Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the church from 6:00 PM until the service hour on Sunday. Those attending the graveside service on Monday are asked to meet at Faith Baptist Church in Oakvale by 10:45 AM.
