James “Pete” Akers passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus at his home on Wednesday evening. Pete was born December 9, 1936, near Elgood, WV. He was the son of David (Lee) and Ruth Easter Akers. He graduated from Athens High School. He married the love of his life, Shelby Rose White, on October 11, 1958; he was very proud and happy to tell everyone they had been married 65 years. In addition to his wife, Pete is survived by daughters, Rose (Brian) Credille of Jefferson City, MO, and Tina (Glenn) Ogden of Rich Creek, VA; grandchildren, Matthew (Tina) Credille, Corey (Courtney) Ogden, Alan (Emelita) Credille, Briana (Josh) McMillan, Sierra Ogden, and Kayla Ogden; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley McManaway and Charlotte Warland; sister-in-law, Emelene Akers, brother- in-law Bernard (Joyce) White; many special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by brothers, David Akers Jr, Marshall Akers, Lawrence Akers and sisters Ella Jean McManaway, Wilma Holdren and Margie Ann Akers. Pete was a beloved member of Glen Lyn Baptist Church, where he served faithfully in many roles and was given the honor of Deacon Emeritus. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He retired from Celanese after 30 years of service. Pete enjoyed being at home and in his yard and garden more than anything. He will be truly missed there by his wife and family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of his life.
