Shelby Rose White Akers went to Heaven on March 13, 2025 to walk the streets of gold with Pete (James) Akers, who was the love of her life and her husband for 65 years before his passing in March 2024. She was born near Elgood, WV, on July 23, 1941 to Theodore (T.R.) and Vernie Simpkins White. In addition to her husband, Shelby was preceded in death by her father and mother and two brothers, William White and Theodore “Junior” White, and many special brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Shelby is survived by daughters, Rose (Brian) Credille of
Jefferson City, MO, and Tina (Glenn) Ogden of Rich Creek,
VA; grandchildren, Matthew (Tina) Credille, Corey (Courtney) Ogden, Alan Credille, Briana (Josh) McMillan, Sierra Ogden (Alex), and Kayla Ogden (Tory); seven great grandchildren; one brother, Bernard (Joyce) White; two sisters-in-law, Shirley McManaway and Charlotte Warland; many nieces and nephews.
Shelby was a beloved member of Glen Lyn Baptist Church where she will be most remembered as a Sunday School teacher for children and teens, many of whom express their appreciation of her motherly love. She also served the church as director of the women’s ministry and in many other ways. Shelby was an encouragement to many during her 18-year breast cancer journey. She always had a positive attitude and faced each battle with determination, setting her goals and reaching them one at a time. She lived by counting her blessings and reminding others to do the same.
A special thanks to Blue Ridge Cancer Center for the many
years of care, to Good Samaritan Hospice, and to her great-
niece, Katherine Lauinger for special care and attention
during her last days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Relay for Life: American Cancer Society, ATTN: Kim Woodyard, 966 Flat Hollow Road, Pearisburg, VA 24134
